Summer Specials
Summer is finally upon us and it's time to get out and enjoy the sun while we can!
One of the best things about the summer season is that we get the chance to do lots of things outside that we can't usually do for most of the year round, and that includes eating!
Getting out in the summer air and enjoying a BBQ or picnic with friends, family and loved ones is a great way to relax and socialise and so we've got plenty of fabulously tasty suggestions for alfresco eating with a difference!
Family Fun
Summer means more than just sunny weather and holidays, it's that time of year when the long school holidays stretch ahead and sometimes it can be daunting knowing how to entertain the young ones for a whole six weeks.
Don't despair though, there's not much that beats a good old family picnic. If you're on a budget, you can make it as cheap and cheerful as you like, and there's plenty of scope for fitting in some family fun too.
Where to Go
You can find any excuse to have a family picnic and almost any location. Try one of the following perfect picnic spots:
- Country parks
- Playgrounds
- The beach
- Riverside
- Community gardens
- The zoo
- Local fairs
- Farms and fields
- Your own back garden
And we all know British weather can be temperamental, so if all else fails you can grab a blanket and have a fun indoors picnic in your own home!
What to Do
As those of us who have kids know, it's not always enough to simply sit and enjoy the surroundings. So some entertainment will need to be planned in!
If you're having a family picnic in the countryside, you could go on a nature scavenger hunt, or walk or ride bikes on a nature trail. A park area is a great setting for playing football, 'catch' or frisbee. And make sure you take a beach ball if you're planning a seaside picnic.
Apart from all the fun outdoors activities you can enjoy before or after your picnic, there are plenty of great board games and family staples like 'I Spy' that you can play to keep everyone occupied.
